Meaning

One hundred and eight names of Padmavati Devi, consort of Venkateshwara, said one at a time with kumkuma offered at each. The list opens Om Padmaavatyai Namah, Om Devyai Namah, Om Padmodbhavaayai Namah — by the third name her birth from the lotus is already settled. This is the archana form of the worship for which the Padmavati Stotram is the hymn.

Significance

Kumkumarchana is the seva she is known for. At Tiruchanur it is the request women stand in line for, and at home the same thing is done with a small plate of kumkuma and her picture. The names work through the lotus from every side — born of it, seated on it, lotus-eyed, lotus-handed — and then place her beside Venkateshwara, so the list is at once about a goddess and about a marriage. Tradition holds that Padmavati is approached before her husband, the way one speaks to the mother of the house before the master of it, and the archana is where that is enacted: it is short enough to be done every Friday and personal enough that families keep the same plate and the same small silver face year after year. What is asked for is usually specific — a marriage, a child, an illness lifted, a household steadied — and the namavali does not pretend otherwise.

How and when to chant

Friday, morning after a bath or at the evening lamp. Place her image or a kalasha, light a lamp, and say the names one by one, offering a pinch of kumkuma at each. Turmeric, bangles, a blouse-piece and lotus when the season gives it are the offerings women bring to Tiruchanur, and the same are set out at home. Karthika is her month; many keep the archana every Friday through it and then on Panchami Teertham, the last day of her Brahmotsavam. Reading the Padmavati Stotram first and then doing this archana is the common order at home.

What is kumkumarchana and how is it done at home?

Can unmarried women and men do this archana?
Yes. There is no restriction by marital status or gender, and no initiation is needed. Unmarried women commonly keep it for a year asking for a good marriage; men do it for the household. The only expectation is a bath beforehand and an unhurried pace.
