Meaning
The Hanumad Ashtakam is a deeply devotional hymn describing the helpless condition of the soul trapped in the cycle of samsara and seeking the compassionate refuge of Lord Hanuman. Each verse reveals the intensity of suffering in worldly existence and the supreme power of Hanuman to uplift the fallen and grant spiritual liberation.
The first verse praises Hanuman as the radiant lotus-eyed devotee of Sri Rama, destroyer of evil with mighty arms, and the embodiment of compassion. The devotee begs for the blessing of becoming a servant at his lotus feet.
The second verse describes the painful condition of a soul scorched by the fire of samsara, bound by desires for family, wealth and worldly attachments, yet fortunate to remember Hanuman due to past merit, seeking His grace.
The third verse speaks of the frightening ocean of worldly existence filled with serpents of sorrow, pain and poison. The devotee cries to Hanuman to rescue him from drowning.
The fourth verse compares samsara to a raging sea with terrifying waves of lust and anger, overpowering the soul, begging Hanuman to lift him up.
The fifth verse portrays samsara as a dark forest full of dangerous beasts such as lust, pride and jealousy. The devotee seeks Hanuman’s protection from these afflictions.
The sixth verse describes samsara as a huge tree with countless branches of karma, yielding the fruits of sorrow and decorated with the deceptive flowers of desire, begging Hanuman to free him.
The seventh verse compares samsara to a poisonous serpent whose fangs torment the body and mind. The devotee, fallen in the cave of delusion, prays for Hanuman’s compassionate rescue.
The eighth verse depicts the senses as thieves who steal the treasure of discrimination, and samsara as a violent force tearing the body apart. The only refuge is the flawless lotus feet of Hanuman.
The final verse promises that whoever recites this Ashtakam will attain the abode of Lord Rama and Achyuta, blessed by Hanuman himself.
