Meaning

Sri Chandi Ashtottara Shatanamavali is the archana list of a hundred and eight names of Chandika, the Devi of the Devi Mahatmya. It opens Om Maheshvaryai namah, Om Mahadevyai namah, Om Jayantyai namah. Households use it on Navaratri days and priests use it for kumkuma archana at the close of a Chandi Patha, when the seven hundred verses have been read and the names are offered one by one.

Significance

The third name is the clue to the whole list. Jayanti is the first word of the verse every reader of the Saptashati knows - jayanti mangala kali bhadrakali kapalini, durga kshama shiva dhatri svaha svadha namostu te - and the namavali keeps walking through that same vocabulary. Read in order, the names work as a compressed index of the three charitas of the Devi Mahatmya, which the Markandeya Purana carries: the Devi who wakes Vishnu against Madhu and Kaitabha, the Devi who takes Mahishasura on the field, the Devi who sends Kali out against Shumbha and Nishumbha. Chandi means the wrathful one, and the text is candid that this wrath is roused only when the asuras have already refused every other answer. Tradition holds that the archana done at the end of a Saptashati reading completes it; the namavali itself makes no promise in its own words.

How and when to chant

Navaratri, and within it Ashtami and Navami, is when the Chandi archana is most often done; otherwise Tuesday and Friday. Morning after bath is the usual hour. A full Saptashati parayana is not a casual undertaking - the tradition has you make a sankalpa and read the Devi Kavacha, Argala Stotra and Kilaka Stotra before the first chapter, and many households take nine days over it, one charita or a set of chapters a day. The ashtottara is the lighter door into the same worship: light a lamp, and offer kumkuma or red flowers at each of the 108 names. Where a Chandi Homa is performed, it is done by a priest with a proper sankalpa and is not something to attempt from a printed book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Chandi, and is she different from Durga?
Chandi or Chandika is the name the Devi Mahatmya uses most often for the goddess who fights Mahishasura and Shumbha-Nishumbha. Durga is another name for the same Devi in the same text. So they are not two goddesses; Chandi names her anger, Durga names her as the one hard to reach and hard to cross.
Where does the Chandi Ashtottara come from?
The names belong to the Devi Mahatmya tradition - the seven hundred verses inside the Markandeya Purana that are read as the Durga Saptashati. The namavali itself is an archana list drawn from that vocabulary and printed in puja handbooks; it is not a chapter of the Purana.
Should I read the Durga Saptashati before the ashtottara?
Only if you intend to. The ashtottara stands on its own for a daily lamp. When a full Saptashati parayana is done, the order is sankalpa, then Devi Kavacha, Argala and Kilaka, then the chapters, and the kumkuma archana with the 108 names at the end.
Is a Chandi Homa necessary?
No. Chandi Homa is a large ritual done by priests with a sankalpa, prescribed offerings and a full parayana, usually for a temple or a family occasion. A householder who wants Chandika's worship at home does the archana with the 108 names and a ghee lamp, and that is complete in itself.
Which days are best for Chandi archana?
Navaratri above all, with Ashtami and Navami as the peak days, and Chaitra Navaratri in the spring. Through the rest of the year Tuesday and Friday are her weekdays. Morning after bath is the common hour, though there is no rule against an evening lamp.
Can women recite the Chandi Ashtottara?
Yes, and in most Kannada households it is women who keep the Devi archana going. A namavali carries no gender restriction. The kumkuma archana of the Devi during Navaratri, along with the haldi-kumkuma given to visiting women, is largely a women's observance in Karnataka.
How long does one recitation take?
About eight to twelve minutes if you pause to offer kumkuma at each name, a little less if you only recite. A full Durga Saptashati reading is a different matter - roughly three hours at a steady pace, which is why most households spread it over the nine nights.
What is the meaning of the opening name Maheshvari?
Maheshvari is the shakti of Maheshvara, Shiva, and one of the Saptamatrikas the Devi Mahatmya brings onto the field against Shumbha and Nishumbha. Beginning the list with her sets Chandika in that company at once, before the fiercer names arrive later in the sequence.
